This film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel by author and columnist Catelyn Moran and is based on a mostly true story. As author Catelyn Moran says, "The most important job of a teenager is to decide who you are and invent yourself. You don't just make one wrong choice and that's the end of it; you constantly create new versions of yourself and experience 20 to 30 versions of yourself before you turn 30." Just as Joanna makes many youthful mistakes, such as falling in love with a rock star she meets while reporting and getting carried away and hurting her family.
